First things first!
Rap isn't turning anybody into anything. Rap converts records to sales and that's it
Ultimately, if anyone wants to be a hoe that's their personal choice
None of my nieces or sports students behave or dress remotely in such a manner because they don’t commit themselves to the sub-culture. They’re brought up by their parents, not mtv. Their subscriptions end at music purchases and the occasional fashion nod as trends are supposed to be reasonably utilised. In other words, they think out of a bigger box
Let's, as they say, keep it real
The music industry is just that; an industry. And the ethical nature of capital industries precludes moral accountability
The problem with us is that we're still wearily looking for that established slot in the social family of western society; i.e. an identity
So nomadic and desperate are we that we cling to the image that bears something concrete . In the case of hip hop imagery we are offered a sense of impact, status, and redemption. It’s a win win sell. Sex, identity, youthful energy, heroism
Sadly we proceed without caution
For our young, it seems now, that the lure has become a powerful spiral with neither beginning nor end being relevant, as we rejoice in cocking a snoot via medium deemed acceptable
So gratifying is this piece of the pie that perspectives are blinkered
So stimulating to be told that you are the all encompassing nemeses spiting of mediocrity or suppression; that the ill-logic of low slung jeans below the buttocks, synthetic marijuana, associated whiskey brand consumption, dressing in styles that fifteen years ago were the thumbprint of prostitutes on red light district strips have become skewered symbols of expression
This is empowerment against the machine. Indeed it is the sexual empowerment of women at the kitsch extreme
But there are external driving forces
The music industry will reward young black people who promote such an impression and the sex industry, which has the easiest and most experienced marketing job in the world, has long contracted itself to the phenomenal rise of the hip hop epidemic.
Where our involvement becomes particularly more acute, is in that great array of accessible sub - cultures there is none other by which we are presently largely identified.
When a white kid goes to university and professes to be a Goth or rock enthusiast it's expected to be transient experience, for sooner rather than later the big wheel is waiting for him to take his rung, with no uncertain hurdles such as exclusions borne from stereotypes.
Your Ben Eltons , Johnny Rottens , Mick Jaggers have a sofa of respectability waiting for them once they've ditched the hairstyle and taken on the elders' mantle.
And let's not forget; black and mixed race sisters are frustratingly plagued with the age old adage that they are all sexual animals in bed, While nationalities have accolades such as Brazilian women being the world's sexiest, and Latino’s the hottest blood, Italians apparently sophisticated, Asians the most exotic etc et,, the slanderous whisper for the descendants of slavery is that black women are 'goers' i.e. will fulfill male fantasies without self-respect.As per usual, defined with primal animalistic features
Let's be brutally honest
The white man has always enjoyed seeing us sing and dance. It's the only niche market in which we can stake a claim to global prominence.
ARE our kids running around giving the impression they’re immoral? There are thousands of ethicized pretty young models and dancers on screens twenty-four hours a day. Sexualized to the most saleable degree, implying enjoyment, power, belonging and charisma.. Against the scales of proportionaly representing actresses on our screens, of course they are acting like hoes. They're doing as they're jolly well taught
